Struggling to believe the effectiveness of this beauty hack? Yeah, we were pretty skeptical too. So we put it to the test and found out if coconut oil and baking soda really do turn back the clock.
The recipe couldn’t be simpler, as I’m sure you can image.
2 tbsp Coconut oil
1 tsp Baking soda
Mix into a paste
It’s hard to believe that something so simple could be so effective, most beauty creams are jam packed with ingredients! So what makes coconut oil and baking soda so special?
Coconut oil is great for the skin, according to top dermatologist, Dr Frances Prenna Jones. He advises that “coconut oil is a great emollient if the barrier function of your skin is disturbed. It’s great at repairing and restoring this quickly as it is rapidly absorbed into the epidermis.”
Research suggests that coconut oil is naturally moisturizing, antibacterial and antifungal making it the perfect remedy for atopic dermatitis. If it’s powerful enough to combat eczema, then it has a lot of potential in the skincare industry! Many women already use it in their daily routines, as a cleanser or even to remove eye makeup.
Baking soda is a mild exfoliant this helps it to clear pores and exfoliate the skin. At the same time it will dry out the skin, which can be effective for clearing up acne. Paired with the moisturising properties of coconut oil, we’re starting to see how this mixture can work wonders!
Still not convinced that your pantry staples should make their way into your skincare routine? We hear ya, beauty fads come and go and let’s be honest, we need reliable, proven products in our skincare collection. Forget homemade miracles, let’s take a look at XYZ smart collagen, a proven collagen cream which also claims to reverse the signs of ageing.
XYZ Smart Collagen Cream
There are hundreds of collagen creams available on the market and it can be a mindfield to know which one is right for you. With a hefty price tag on many miracle creams it’s important to research the product before committing to buy. That’s where we here to help, we have been reviewing a collagen cream called XYZ Collagen Cream. Here we will lay out our findings, explain how the cream works, what ingredients it contains and our final verdict.
We will all go through the ageing process at some point, it is unavoidable and we are destined to look older! Now, that said there are many tips and tricks we can use to delay signs of ageing or simply hide from it! You will find tonnes of makeup tips, tutorials and advise all over the internet. So reducing dark circles, fine lines and other ageing factors can be easily done with some clever makeup application. However, no one wants to rely on wearing makeup 24/7 and some days it’s nice to go au-natural. So what then?
As with the makeup industry, the skincare market is also booming! From cleansers, to toners, moisturisers to collagen cream and everything in between. There’s bound to be a product out there to fight all your skincare worries. But, with so many brands to choose from it can be difficult to establish what sets one product apart from another. Well, there are few key things to look out for. Firstly, try not to focus solely on the branding and packaging, it’s the cream itself which is important. Research is vital, you should look into the ingredients of a product before you consider buying. You should also look into whether those ingredients, or the product itself is back by clinical studies. Understanding the product itself and how the ingredients work, will enable you to decide if it is the right product for you.
XYZ Collagen Cream
As mentioned this review focuses on XYZ, a collagen cream which claims to reverse the effects of ageing by up to 7.5 years. Not bad ey! Okay, so how does it do that? The aim of XYZ collagen cream is to create a balance between the production of collagen and collagen breakdown within the skin. By doing it can help you achieve smoother, tighter skin and reduce appearance by around 7.5 years within just 12 weeks.
The key ingredient in XYZ is retrieved from the leaf sap of Bulbine frutescens, a South African medical plant. The plant leaves are cold pressed once extracted, this ensures its active compounds are maintained whilst withdrawing the maximum amount of sap.
If you desire to reduce common skin issues such as sagging, loss of collagen, weakended elasticity and wrinkles then collagen cream can help. By intentionally managing your collagen activity you can help to counteract premature signs of ageing. There are many everyday factors which influence how we age, from increased exposure to sunlight to stress and anxiety or even air pollution!
So, XYZ can help to knock a few years off your appearance, pretty clever! But what else can it do? As well as maintaining youthful looking skin XYZ collagen can also have an immediate soothing effect on tattooed skin! Once your skin has been tattooed the scar tissue underneath can cause your collagen to be synthesised too fast. This is where XYZ’s collagen cream can help tattooed skin as the formula restores the equilibrium between collagen production and the breakdown of collagen. Whilst XYZ is solely marketed as a collagen cream for use on your fine lines and wrinkles, it’s pretty handy to know it can help soothe your fresh ink too!

Bulbine frutescens is one of the main ingredients as we’ve already mentioned, but there are other important ingredients involved in the making of XYZ collagen which you should be aware of. Many collagen creams contain something called ‘TGF-β’ which stands for ‘transforming growth factor beta’. XYZ collagen is no different and this is one of the key ingredients used. This is what increases the collagen production in your skin, but it can also result in the overproduction of collagen. The knock on effect is often much lower quality collagen which is why many collagen creams fail to deliver results.
TGF-β stimulates the fibroblast cells within your skin in order to increase collagen production. At the same time compounds called leukotrienes are released as your body’s immune cells become active. In turn this sends the fibroblasts into overdrive resulting in the overproduction of collagen. Due to elastin levels not being as high as the newly produced collagen, the structure of the skin is weaker. Therefore results aren’t noticeable. It’s important that production of new collagen is on par with the elastin in your skin, to deliver strong skin structure and in turn smoother, younger looking skin. Whilst it all sounds a very scientific, it basically means that collagen creams which do not control the level of ‘TGF-β’, simply won’t work effectively!
This is one of XYZ’s unique selling points as it carefully controls new collagen production, to avoid excess collagen and in turn poor results. XYZ’s plant based formula enables new collagen to be produced by stimulating the fibroblasts, but at the same time it stops synthesis of leukotriene. This means levels of collagen will not outweigh the elastin in your skin and hence you can achieve smoother, firmer skin in a matter of weeks.
XYZ Collagen is also backed by clinical trials, this is something you should look out for when researching new products. Proof that a product has worked for others eg. reviews, testimonials or studies will help you choose the right product.
XYZ carried out their study using a controlled placebo and randomising which participants used which cream. They tested this on 21 women between the age of 45 years and 65. The women used the collagen cream twice per day on the face as well as the neck area for 12 weeks. Participant’s had their results taken half way through the study and again at the end of the 12 weeks. These recordings found visible results after just 42 days as well as at the end of the trial. Below are some of the key findings from the trial;
- 100% increase in facial collagen
- 138% wrinkle reduction
- 212% improvement in the appearance of stretch marks
- 137% improvement of the texture of skin
- 84% improvement of the firmness of skin
The brand has also received some positive feedback from customers. Check out some of the comments shared on their Instagram below;

Having tested the cream ourselves we also agree that it had an instant effect on the skin! Whilst there are many moisturisers which have similar effects, XYZ left the skin feeling soft and hydrated. However, it had the added benefit that it helps to tighten and smooth skin too. It is a ‘luxury’ collagen cream so for just under $50 it’s much cheaper than many competitors.
